website refreshWith the User Group Summits just around the corner in St. Louis, the timing of Dynamic Communities’ relaunch of the User Group websites couldn’t be better. During the Summits, members and attendees will be able to follow the Summit experience via the new site, something that they couldn’t do before. Now they can check out the homepage Twitter feed to see up to the second updates from other attendees. The News and Blog feeds will also give a detailed view of conference highlights, such as the keynotes . Attendees can continue to post discussions and network virtually in the attendee-only community, which is where they’ll find the session presentations after the events.

So why the new look and what’s in it for the User Group Members? We asked Katie Froeber, Marketing Manager at Dynamic Communities and she shared her insight:

Jon: What was the main goal behind the redesign as it's a major shift away from the original? What member input was taken into consideration with the design?

Katie: Over the years, we’ve gathered a lot of member feedback regarding our previous sites – the difficulty finding events, the bulky registration process, and inflexibility of login, to name a few. Based on these conversations, we wanted to create a site that was engaging, served up information and events in a searchable and consumable format, and gave our members more control over their accounts and profiles.Another critical piece was integrating the community functionality of Collaborate so that instead of having to go to one site to register for events, and a different site to access discussions, communities, and webinar recordings, there was only one site for members to navigate that included all of their member benefits. As we worked through the information architecture of the new site, we involved a group of members in a feedback activity to understand how members search .

Another critical piece was integrating the community functionality of Collaborate so that instead of having to go to one site to register for events, and a different site to access discussions, communities, and webinar recordings, there was only one site for members to navigate that included all of their member benefits. As we worked through the information architecture of the new site, we involved a group of members in a feedback activity to understand how members search .

This isn’t a one-time fix, but instead a commitment to maintain and improve the site based on the needs of the community. We will continue to gather member feedback through community posts, support cases, emails, conversations, and focus groups, and make adjustments to the site to provide the best experience for our members.

Jon: What are some of the cool new features/functions of the websites?

Katie: One of the most noticeable features is the filtering and sorting functionality. Instead of scrolling through pages of events to find what they are looking for, members can filter by different event criteria, such as event type, and even perform a keyword search.

I believe the feature that our members are most excited about is the increased ability to manage their own information. Starting with the login process – where they can create their own username and password, and continuing through the profile and account areas. Those designated as their company’s primary contact and those with Account Administrator privileges can now easily add or remove team members from their membership. Additionally, the joining, upgrading and renewal processes have been streamlined, allowing members to have more self-service options via the website.

One of the features we’re most excited to release is our new time zone functionality. As you may remember from our previous sites, all events showed in (UTC-5:00) Eastern Time (US/Canada). Coming soon, you can update your time zone preference in your profile, so that you can view upcoming webinars in your preferred time zone. In-person events, such as regional chapter meetings, will always display in the time zone for the location, but virtual events will no longer require time conversions! Please note, all virtual events will default to (UCT-5:00) Eastern Time (US/Canada) if a member does not update their time zone preferences. Look for this feature to be released in the coming weeks!

Thanks Katie and the entire Dynamic Communities team for keeping the member experience top of mind when creating these websites! I’m glad to hear that overall, the feedback has been positive and that site visitors appreciate the new sleeker design, how information is organized, and the ease of finding events. While there may be a few growing pains, it’s reassuring to know that you’ll continue to respond to member questions and make adjustments where needed. I look forward to seeing what’s coming next as you make refinements and developing new features.

hal howard quote

A week off of Hal Howard announcing that he joined Dynamic Communities, Inc. as Executive Director, I had the opportunity to talk with him to get a more personal perspective on what this new journey means to him and to the Community. Read what Hal had to say during the discussion, including his idea of creating a Dynamics Professional Association:

Jon: This is a huge win for Dynamic Communities and its members to have such a supportive advocate join the team, but what does this new union bring to the table for you?

Hal: It allows me to get closer to users and partners in a way that wasn't possible when I worked for Microsoft. I love this community and I want to see people succeed in their businesses. I think a vibrant User Group is key to that success.

Jon: Most of us have memories about our first experience at a User Group (UG) event when they were first introduced. Since you have been involved with the community from the beginning, what's one area of the UGs that when you compare then and now, you can really see the growth?

Hal: I think Andy Hafer and the teams have done a fantastic job in making the User Groups vibrant and listening to the needs of the community. Each group’s needs are a little different and Dynamic Communities has created appropriate content and forums for each. Combine that with success of the products in market and Microsoft’s willingness to lean in and take feedback, and you have a vibrant community.

Jon: You had a significant role in modernizing the Dynamics solutions as we know them today. Are there areas of the UGs that you see an opportunity to modernize and/or transform to strengthen the member experience?

Hal: Largely it’s building on ideas and forums that already exist in the user groups. I see huge opportunities to expand the global community and to strengthen the partner connections organization specifically. I've been discussing the idea of a Dynamics Professional Association for some time and with Microsoft backing off on product certifications, I think that’s an idea that is right for the time. An association could provide certifications and ratings for all its members, whether they are end users or implementers.

Jon: Can you give us some insight as to how the Microsoft team looks at the value of these UGs and moving forward, any plans they have to increase their support and/or presence?

Hal: The AX and GP teams have always been highly supportive of the user groups and I believe this will continue. NAV is following suit and their support should grow. CRM is the newest group, but I know the leadership of that organization is highly-supportive and will be more so going forward.

Jon: When can we meet you?

Hal: We are still working on my travel schedule. Right now, The Partner Connections Event, Summit, Convergence Europe and reIMAGINE are consuming my available time. In the New Year, I expect to be able to get out to some of the regional events.

Welcome to your new role Hal! From talking with many of my peers in the community, I know that we’re all excited to see the momentum you bring to the table and the continued growth of the UGs as you strive to help Dynamics-based organizations succeed.

...But I'm totally looking forward to it! Michelle Spitzer recently announced that the Summits' keynote speaker is Steve Rizzo. Steve will take the stage Wednesday morning, October 15th, to jumpstart our week in St. Louis.

Steve Rizzo is a national headline comedian turned author and motivational business speaker. As a comedian, he's had opening acts such as Drew Carey, Rosie O'Donnell, and Dennis Miller, and has shared the marquee with comedic icons like Ellen DeGeneres, Rodney Dangerfield, Eddie Murphy, and Jerry Seinfeld. He's the author of the best-selling book, "Get Your SHIFT Together" and is a member of the elite Speakers Hall of Fame.

From what I read, Steve is a "seriously funny guy" who will challenge us to shift our focus and way of thinking to discover greater enthusiasm, increased productivity, and new levels of success in our lives and careers. I'm still thinking back to the inspiring keynote from Convergence 2014 that left me feeling like working with Microsoft Dynamics truly does impact peoples' lives, in addition to our businesses, and I hope Steve delivers the same level of inspiration to take us through the end of the year, and beyond.

Ok then, I'm ready! Hope to see you in St. Louis for AXUG Summit, GPUG Summit and NAVUG Summit! If you haven't registered yet, registration rates go up after September 7!

June’s AXUG Manufacturing and Supply Chain FOCUS two-day conferences in Dallas and Indianapolis reined in over 100 AXUG members each, who attended for the 33 breakout sessions that covered both functional and industry topics. In this small group setting, there were loads of great discussions around master planning, manufacturing and supply chain trends, and how Microsoft plans to use technology in the future to help Dynamics AX-based companies do more to improve their customer and manufacturing experiences.

Many attendees were able to share approaches and lessons learned that helped each other realize how they can use Dynamics AX more. This networking also helped to confirm how users’ own experiences that may seem uncommon or challenging, are really not that uncommon in the world of AX implementations and/or upgrades.

Attendees also heard loud and clear that to get the most out of Dynamics AX, users need to understand set up and configurations, focused not just on the buttons to click, but the why behind set ups and what controls how AX operates to support their company’s business processes.

Data Masons’ Brian Lynch presented to the groups, “Collaboration: The Future of Technology and Your Supply Chain – EDI and Beyond.” During Brian’s session he discussed the critical role of EDI communications between manufacturers and suppliers in establishing a competitive advantage and how collaboration in the supply chain is evolving with technology

Included in Brian’s presentation was a discussion around EDI and Dynamics AX 2012 R3’s warehouse management capabilities. One example given was Advance Ship Notices (ASN) staging and the ability to integrate inbound ASNs for receiving into AX and then trigger via scanned license plates (UCC-128 like labels). Brian also highlighted that with ASN generation now native in AX for organizations that require multi-level packing, Data Masons’ Vantage Point EDI Solution can poll or pickup shipment details for transformation to EDI and other formats to partners.

Data Masons will present, “Collaboration: The Future of Technology and Your Supply Chain - EDI and Beyond,” on Thursday, June 12th at 9:45AM. During this session, Data Masons’ Brian Lynch will discuss the critical role of EDI communications between manufacturers and suppliers in establishing a competitive advantage and how collaboration in the supply chain is evolving with technology.

Brian will further discuss that while using EDI as an effective way for suppliers and manufacturers, along with customers, to share data is nothing new, the evolution of technology has increased the opportunity for collaboration between the groups. Brian will give Dynamics AX users insight into uncovering these opportunities and exploring how EDI technology can significantly impact the success of their supply chain operations.

And once it’s a wrap it Dallas, we’ll head to Indianapolis for the next AXUG Focus event, June 19 – 20. We hope to see you in Dallas or Indianapolis!
